Yahoo bought Xoopit, which was one of the startup email companies in July, and reports say that Yahoo spent around $20 million on this deal. Xoopit was one of the useful ways of organizing and managing one’s email. Users will also be able to retrieve content stored in their archived email. This service supported Gmail through a plug-in and it also had capabilities to link to Facebook.
Taking a dig at Google, Yahoo stopped supporting Gmail plug-in. Xoopit users with Gmail accounts will not be able to benefit from Xoopit. Many users found Xoopit to be an effective tool and in particular Gmail users considered this software very useful because it allowed users to aggregate all types of media files from their Gmail accounts. After the acquisition of Xoopit by Yahoo, the service was integrated to Yahoo’s own webmail service.
As per the notification sent by Xoopit to its Gmail users, it will store the media files in Yahoo’s servers until November 13. If the users have deleted their source files in Gmail, they should take a backup copy of what they have uploaded to Xoopit.
Xoopit just copied the media from the Gmail accounts and stored on to Xoopit servers so by default it did not delete the data in Gmail servers. If the users should have deleted the source media files manually then they will have to now move it to their own storing space before November 13. Yahoo has to hold on to the data until February in compliance with the 90-day data retention policy.
This move obviously is a rival action against its competitor and Yahoo justified its move saying that it is shutting down Xoopit plug-in for Gmail in order to come up with a better version of the product to make it more compatible with its own email service, “Yahoo Mail”. Yahoo is not only discontinuing the plug-in for Google but also for Firefox and Facebook. This is very likely to make Xoopit very unpopular because Gmail, Firefox and Facebook are some of the most preferred services online and to block all these users from Xoopit is more likely to frustrate the users rather than pull them towards Yahoo.
Gmail in particular has been one of the most trusted email services today and many Yahoo mail users and hotmail users moved to Gmail because it was considered more secure option secondly Gmail allowed people to configure their email accounts in popular email applications such as Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express for free. So Xoopit is will suddenly lose a lot of users and if there are going to be any users moving to Yahoo just to make use of Xoopit, then it will only be a minor fraction of the crowd.
