Windows 7 to have Six Editions

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Window 7 is yet to be released officially but lot of news seems to be circulating about this new version of Windows. Though widely expected, it has not created as much buzz as Windows Vista. It could be possibly because of the fact that Windows Vista turned out to be such a disappointment. There are reports already that Windows 7 has security issues. While Microsoft tries to project Windows 7 as something different from Windows Vista in terms of the size of the OS and operating speed, it also seems to be less secure than Windows Vista.

Microsoft has announced that Windows 7 will have two basic editions namely Home Premium and Professional. However, there will be totally six editions, which are developed to meet specific customer requirements. Microsoft has been receiving constant feedback from its users that there are too many confusing editions with each version of Windows and they would rather prefer something straightforward. In order to appease its customers Microsoft has said that will have two main editions. However, other customers may have needs that are too specific and which may not be met by the two basic or primary versions of Windows 7; in such situations, they will still have the option to go for other versions that are specifically designed to meet their requirements besides the two basic editions. This does not change the fact that Windows 7 has six editions.

Microsoft recommends Windows 7 Home Premium for general consumers who do not have any specific computing needs besides the basic functions. Those who want little advanced features should opt for Windows 7 Professional. This version will be required by businesses and computer professionals. Microsoft has built all the editions in such a way when a user wants to upgrade from one version to another, will not lose any of the features or functionalities of the previous version. The upgrade is designed to add just the missing features or functions. This shows a very clear mapping of the software architecture. All the editions can be upgraded to any version giving lot of flexibility to for the users.

Unlike Windows Vista, Windows 7 does not make low-end machines sluggish. This software is highly optimized to operate in all system configurations ranging from low-end to high-end configurations. All the six editions that are to be released can be used in all types of machines. Microsoft is hoping to win back the trust of its customers, which it has lost with Windows Vista. This time even the Microsoft enthusiasts are keeping their fingers crossed; the world is standing by to see what this one time OS giant has to offer this time. They will be able to gain back the market share if Microsoft offers a secure and stable OS in the name of Windows 7. Microsoft is yet to announce the cost of Windows 7. Hope it will not make mistakes in this area, which is very crucial especially in these times of global financial slow down.
