The New Year, 2009 did not start with a positive note for the internet giant Google. Verizon Communications Inc has decided to go with Microsoft for its needs on Internet search services for cell phones. Ivan Seidenberg, the Chief Executive of Verizon has announced their decision to go with Microsoft for the internet search services for their cell phones at a conference on Wednesday. The CEO of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, confirmed the same. As of now, the working terms are yet to be announced and nothing is known regarding the other details of the tie up.
This is a very timely tie up for Microsoft, as the company has been looking for a break through in its battle against Google its major competitor. This ends the yearlong speculation in the industry. The entire industry was keenly waiting for the outcome of this speculation. Finally, Verizon has named its partner for its wireless communications. The wireless services of Verizon are to take over the first position enjoyed by AT&T Inc as the top mobile service provider of the US. The New Year has started well for Microsoft.
This should boost the dwindling confidence of Microsoft after all its failed efforts in 2008 including the yahoo acquisition efforts. However, the industry is rather surprised that Verizon should name Microsoft because it is a known fact that Google and Yahoo would be much stronger partners when it comes to internet search industry is concerned.
There are still a number of internet experts feel that Google would have been a better choice for Verizon when it comes to personalized ad serving technology is concerned. Experts feel that Tie up with Microsoft in this regard might lead to poor customer experience.
Reports about the possible tie up between Verizon and Microsoft were in the Wall Street Journal last year. There were also rumors that Verizon is in discussion with Google. However, all speculations have ended now. Microsoft now has to enhance its technology to rise up to the challenge. Steve Ballmer commenting on the current trends said that, βIt feels like we’ve entered a period of reduced expectation, a time when we may be tempted to temper our optimism and scale back our ambition”. This applies to all the other companies too everyone is taking for granted that reduced expectations and reduced performance are to be expected as we are still recovering from the effects of the credit crunch. If companies are going to take on to this approach, then they are likely to perform badly because they set lower standards for themselves.
This recent failure to get the contract from Verizon should make Google to tighten its belts and not be too complacent with its top position that it enjoyed so far in the industry. Market trends are highly volatile and it can change anytime. There are more factors than we can think of that control the market trends. Therefore, no company can afford to sit back and relax.
