The Future of Mobile Advertising September 6th, 2008

Mobile advertising is a given. It’s the future, no-one denies it - although not everyone is happy about it.

If I am using my mobile to search for something (like a pizza joint) and I feel that I am being charged for the time I spend online via my cell, I might get a bit ticked at the fact that ads are taking up my time - not to mention space on my isty bitsy screen.

This puts me right in line with the majority of people who don’t like commercials… but understand the need for them. Apparently incentives will make me feel better - at least, 37% of people say they feel that way, according to a survey by ABI research. Of course, 11% said it wouldn’t help as far as they are concerned, they hate text ads anyway.

“We think that in general, advertisers and operators must tread carefully when delivering marketing messages to a consumer’s mobile handset, especially given that many subscribers believe they are paying a significant amount of money for their mobile services,” says research director Michael Wolf. “However, we believe that marketing and advertising messaging that is properly crafted and that utilizes incentives could enjoy more acceptance on the part of the consumer.”

Well, online couponing is up - what about instant gratification? We all know that a huge part of mobile search is expected to be local and retail based. Restaurants, stores, etc in the local vicinity - how about an on phone coupon for $5.00 off my order at the local pizzeria? That would be incentive, from my point of view.

Ads for the Gap or Big and Tall Men could also be accompanied by a discount offer. I’m liking the idea - imagine, it could be expanded to almost any type of local business. What about automotive? Emergency tow, locksmith, nearest garage.

I’m like anyone else. Make it worth my while, and my rigid stance on almost anything will relax! The avenue for online mobile advertising is widening by the day, so there should be plenty of room for pertinent ads that won’t make me want to throw my phone in the nearest river - and I’m definitely open to couponing. Make it a click and pay ad - Let me place my order from my phone, use the coupon and receive my discount before heading over to pick up my made to order pie - sounds good to me.
