The new kid on the block has arrived, and he’s Cuil! The search engine that is supposed to have a 120 billion page index is here and with a snappy Gaelic name to boot.
Why get excited? The ‘no PageRank required’ search engine was built by former Googlers, who decided they could go one better. It cost them $33 mil to build it, so I’m sure they have fingers crossed right about now.
We’ll have to see if the concept is cool enough to catch on! The main attraction of Cuil is actually diametrically opposed to the current Google trend of trying to preemptively guess what you want based on IP address, search history and other personal information.
Cuil actually promises up front that it will NOT collect your data, proclaiming their strong privacy commitment – a stumbling block for Google recently.
Unlike other challengers to the throne, Cuil is a search engine built from the ground up, rather than a sorter of other engine’s results. The husband and wife team of Costello and Patterson hope to challenge Google on its own ground.
