Sinofsky Steps up at Microsoft

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Steven Sinofsky is a long time Microsoft spearhead employee – he ran the Microsoft Office initiative and managed the client side of things simultaneously, then moved to Windows, leading Windows Live Engineering Group in 2006. It took two people to fill his shoes with the Office responsibilities (Kurt DelBene and Antoine Leblond were Sinofsky’s replacements when that move took place) and now Sinofsky is taking on even more responsibility.

Sinofsky has just been made president of the entire Windows Division, which includes not only the Enghineering group for Windows Live, but responsibility for engineering and marketing for Internet Exlorer as well.

Sinofsky, who holds degrees from both Cornell and the University of Massachusetts Amherst and was also the visiting scholar at Harvard Business School in 1998, has an excellent record as a capable, determined leader – and in the face of Microsofts burgeoning reputation as a rival to Google, he seems an excellent choice to run this fact of the company.

CEO Steve Ballmersang his praises in a statement recently, saying, “Steven Sinofsky has demonstrated the ability to lead large teams that deliver great products.  The work he and the team have done in getting ready to ship Windows 7 really defines how to develop and ship world-class software.  He is a perfect fit to lead the Windows group.”
