The addition of new apps geared toward the Facebook timeline is something that has piqued the interest of many SEOs as it is a possible new way to get a product in front of people without actually having to advertise geared toward them. While many people are not fond of the new Facebook timeline, it is an inevitability. Everyone is going to get it eventually, like it or not, and everyone is a lot of people. The other side of it is that it may produce unintended circumstances.
Having all of your social networks integrated is all the rage, in fact it is hard to do much of anything without being logged into a series of social networks that are all interconnected. What appears on one network often finds its way to all of your networks. That can be problematic. Imagine making a run for the boss to pick up some widgets. After returning a half hour late, you complain about traffic. It sounds good, but your FourSquare update that went to your Facebook and Twitter – along with everything else got you busted. You took a little detour to the mall and that might cost you big.
The other problem that has been noted is when it provides a bit too much. You may not even realize you are all logged in and broadcasting that you’re at a strip club – or maybe even the gynecologist. Not everything is meant to be shared regardless of what young mister Zuckerburg thinks. So, while the timeline is an avenue to get things out like “I’m at XYZ’s Roast Beef Shack”, it can also be a way to get you in deep water. That is something no SEO, SMM or regular net denizen wants.
