In SEO news, talk of a Facebook search engine, or at least vastly improved search product, has been headlining much of what has been talked about within the industry. One of the big questions about whether or not Facebook would ever pursue such a thing is whether or not people actually wanted it , and the other whether or not they could challenge Google. While a real Facebook search engine would be a way off into the future, and improved search function may be coming very soon.
It appears that people do want or would embrace a Facebook search engine. That wasn’t so clear cut barely a year ago, but with Google having become more advertisement driven than relevant, people are willing to explore alternatives. Whether being seriously competitive with Google is possible is another story. Depending on whether Facebook can hold it’s market share or not as a social platform would drive a lot of what they could do as a search engine.
The main thing is that Facebook knows they need to improve internal search and they are on their way to it. By being able to offer a better internal search for what is already a tremendous wealth of information., Facebook will leach some of Google’s market share without even trying to directly compete. There is no word on exactly when this will roll out, and Facebook has a skeleton crew running search as it is in the engineering department, but some estimates place this at happening this year – at least in a limited form .
