Search Engines Pledge to Haiti Relief

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

All three search engines are stepping up to the plate.

Google’s blog reads:

Free Google Voice Calls to Haiti
To help US families reach relatives in Haiti, for the next two weeks, Google Voice is offering free calls to Haiti.
If you don’t have a Google Voice account, you can request an invitation at www.google.com/voice.

On January 12, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti. Join recovery efforts mobilizing around the world to assist earthquake victims. Your donation will help disaster victims rebuild their lives and their communities. Google will also donate $1 million to help organizations provide relief.

Google also has information and images on their LatLong blog:

We’ve worked closely with GeoEye throughout the afternoon to make their most recent satellite imagery of Haiti, taken at approximately 10:27am EST today, available as a KML overlay for Google Earth

Yahoo says:

Here are the ways we are helping.

* The homepages of Yahoo.com, Yahoo! UK, Yahoo! Italy, Yahoo! Canada, and Yahoo! Mobile are connecting people to the latest news and ways to donate.
* Yahoo! News is providing ‘How to Help’ links in related stories and created a Topic page about the earthquake with donation resources.
* The Yahoo! Employee Foundation approved a $100,000 emergency grant to UNICEF and Partners in Health.
* US Yahoo!s have donated more than $80,000 to the cause in the last 48 hours, including corporate matches for those donations.

It doesn’t stop there. We are scheduling banner ads across the Yahoo! network to support organizations like the American Red Cross and UNICEF who are providing relief efforts in Haiti. We are also providing prominent placements on Yahoo! Sports and OMG to encourage people to donate. And there is more to come.

Microsoft /Bing is also active:

On January 12, 2010, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck near the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. Disaster response efforts are underway, and the total effects of the quake are as-yet unknown. Microsoft has activated its Disaster Response Team to monitor the situation in Haiti and support response efforts as appropriate. Through Microsoft’s support, nonprofit partner NetHope has been able to set up an immediate response, with specific focus on establishing temporary telecommunications infrastructure to allow humanitarian agencies to communicate and provide relief to the affected victims.

Microsoft is making an initial commitment of $1.25 million, which includes cash and in-kind contributions.

All three are making it easy to donate online to help.
