Print Magazines to become part of Google Book Search

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

As we all know Google never stops with its efforts to extending its territories on the web. It is quite Alexandrian in its approach; never to be content with the area covered. Google is set out to include all print magazines to their book search project. Google has already included, books, newspapers to its list. Not it is planning to archive billions of magazine pages. It is in a way a noble effort as these magazines will go online for future generations to review hundreds of years down the line.

The process involved in including magazines to the project is same as for books and newspapers. The magazines will be first scanned and converted into digital format. These digitized magazines will be presented using an interface similar to the newspaper archive interface. This will have a number of features such as flipping the book from cover to cover or just getting into a specific cover story or article. The quality of zoom in and zoom out feature has been improved with magazine search. Another stunning feature of magazine search is that when the magazines are viewed the covers, all the places mentioned in each issue will be presented in graphical format using Google Map. These places will have links to the magazine pages where they are referred.

As of now, no popular magazines are included to this magazine search such as Time Inc or New Yorker or Sports Illustrated. These magazines are yet to be digitized and made available online. Google will bear the cost of digitizing the magazines and making it available in their search interface. Magazine publishers have full rights to use the digital pages in their websites.

Google in its official blog notes that the first English magazine dates back to 1704 and since then millions of magazines have been printed on all possible topics. Google will try to make as exhaustive compilation as possible. Now you can read the magazine stories in their original context rather than individual articles. You will be able to browse all issues on any given topic. Moreover, you can make an exhaustive research on any topic by making a quick topic search. You will be able to browse through all the articles on the same topic from multiple magazines. There will be no shortage of information on any given topic. When you make a magazine search, relevant books on the searched topic will also be listed along side to help you acquire more information on any chosen topic. Google has promised to make book search results and magazine search results as part of its regular Google.com search results. This can however, clog the website results when you are searching for a service or a product unless there is a button that will allow you to select the sources to be searched for while making your searches. Google has taken online search far ahead into the future when compared to other leading internet search players in the market.
