No-No to Apple Advertisements in Google AdWords September 6th, 2008

Australian resellers fear the threat of having losing their online leads as all the advertisements related to Apple have completely disappeared from Google AdWords. In fact, Apple is trying other options like clamping down on other companies using its own trademark and making out its presence.
The condition was initially noticed by David Macintosh who is a Sydney based Apple reseller. He noticed that no ads which included the term ‘Apple’ was getting listed in any of the search pages of Google. But links leading directly to Apple’s official website were still working. David Macintosh understood what was happening only after he received the message from Google informing that few of his ads were suspended and all of the suspended ads had the term ‘Apple’ included in it.
The email Macintosh received from Google also insisted him to have the term ‘Apple’ removed from the ad in order to have his ads approved. But Macintosh says that he is wondering how he would sell Apple products without using their brand name.
He argues that being an Apple Authorized Reseller he is authorized to use its brand name, logo and trademark. He also added saying that he is not supposed to be using generic terms like ‘desktop’ or ‘laptop’ in the advertising messages.
Macintosh now feels handicapped without being able to use the internet for his business to its fullest. He says that it is really a critical situation for all independent Apple Resellers in Australia as there is a local US retail presence in Australia now and without being able to find any information about Apple products in the internet it is obvious for the customers to look for other alternative options.
Other the other hand, Rob Shilkin, the Australian spokesperson for Google has confirmed that Google is having certain procedures by which the trademark holders can restrict the usages of their trademark by other companies in AdWords. He said that Google would monitor and take immediate action regarding the issue if they receive any complaints from the trademark company. The issue would be investigated immediately and the usage of the trademark in the Google AdWords title or the message would be stopped completely.
Not limiting to Apple and Mac, many other such keywords have been restricted this way. Even the popular term ‘iPod’ doesn’t produce any advertising results for the keyword other the main official link to iPod Store. There are many other similar keywords which are generating no search results for the keywords in Google’s Adwords.
There are many other resellers who have noticed the same problem. One among them has mentioned that being local resellers of Apple products and concentrating on the niche market, they totally rely on Google Adwords and the increased price of $13.50 (Aus) per click from $0.80 (Aus) would be too heavy on their pockets. They have also requested approval to allow the usage of the term ‘iPhone’ in their ads as it is a hot product in the market. Though they have been expecting a favorable reply from Apple Australia, they are still awaiting a positive reply.
