Mozilla, one of the popular browsers that holds 20% of the market share in the browser world has recently crossed the one billion mark for their add-on downloads. This is a very important achievement for Mozilla. This figure does not constitute the number of users who have downloaded the parent browser FireFox. This achievement indicates that Mozilla has contributed a great deal to the online community through its software applications. It has established itself as a favorite software player for many of its fans online.
As per the records, Mozilla has been keeping track of this information only since 2005 and this is a major achievement then to reach this 1 billion mark in three years. If we have to take into considerations the downloads before 2005, then the 1 billion mark should have been reached much in advance. Furthermore, the count that has been published is for the downloads that are done via addons.mozilla.org. Mozilla has its add-ons in the other places as well so total number of downloads will be much higher than the announced figure if we take into consideration the downloads before 2005 and add-ons that are hosted in locations other than addons.mozilla.org.
In the official Mozilla Blog, Justin Scott has stated, “This number only includes downloads from addons.mozilla.org, but as many add-ons are hosted elsewhere, we can be sure the actual number is even higher.”
Mozilla also launched another cool add-on yesterday, Fashion Your Firefox that will allow the users to customize their browser. Therefore, there is much happening in the Mozilla’s world. The daily downloads per day averages around 1.5 million per day. This figure is constantly on the increase.
Mozilla has recently been eating its competition slowly gaining popularity. More and more people have started preferring FireFox for their browser because of the security features it offers its users. Mozilla has been very creative in branding itself and in promoting the brand name, it has established. In June it launched an innovative campaign to get into the Guinness Book of World Records for the most downloaded software on a single day. This was considered to be a clever marketing strategy that was not thought of before by any other major player including Google. With all these marketing efforts, now Mozilla has covered 20% of the market share, grabbing a great deal form Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Mozilla hopes to reach the next billion in a much shorter time. Now that Mozilla is becoming increasingly popular, it should ring a bell for all those Web designers and SEO professionals out there to start looking at compatibility issues in their designs and coding. All along web designing and programming were based on Internet Explorer. Now this cannot be the case anymore. Websites might be losing out on potential traffic owing to non-compatibility issues with regard to Mozilla browser. There are a number of web applications that tell us, “You are using a browser type other than Internet Explorer.” We cannot afford to have such notices hereafter, if we want to capture a wider market our designs and coding should start considering this growing internet player Mozilla.
