Mobile Search Improves as iGoogle Expands

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

Mobile search is the future, or so they say, and the price of CPM is astounding for mobile search as advertisers scramble for position in the new market.

Originally clunky, like all new technology, mobile search is settling down as users become accustomed to having their desktop data in their pocket.

Fast and enjoyable user experience is the goal of almost all new innovations when it comes to mobile search, and Google has implemented several shortcuts to make navigating on the go easier and faster.

The G-mail interface introduced in January made e-mail easier to use, requiring no refresh or redirect – the auto complete that helps speed up your e-mail address entries is a nice touch.

The plug in revealed in March was the second step, eliminating the initial search steps like finding the browser application, opening it, and navigating to Google.com before entering your query.

Next came the search suggestions feature, an attempt to speed searches and cut down on necessary typing. It didn’t seem to significantly cut the total time needed for search, but user enjoyment rose considerably.

The most recent goodie for iGoogle fans is the option to modify from your browser and see the changes on your mobile, or to set up a completely different home page on your mobile by dropping and dragging frequently used application to the toop of the page.

With the UK’s mobile industry through the roof, and the US not far behind, many advertisers see a huge market for geographic targeting as well as sheer convenience. Ads are being modified and generated for the smaller screen, and competition for keywords is fierce.

For those not so quick with their fingers, a shortcut in the form of a voice reading software might be in order. To be able to say ‘search for _____” and have it done is a huge boost to searchers across the board.

As Google continues to expand, more and more people will be using basic search on their mobile daily. Book marking your browser page makes it faster to return to the browser by the single click, and many other perks are rumored to be in the offing.
