Languishing in Non-Google Land? Here’s Some Good News! July 4th, 2008

The Google Search Quality Team’s Mariya Moeva has made an excellent video on how to get re-indexed by Google if your site has been demoted or deleted for violation of webmaster guidelines.

Basically, if Google drop-kicks you to the curb, there is usually a specific reason, and sometimes they even give you a heads up as to what it is. If you are mysteriously missing from the search results, the first thing you should do is log into your Webmaster Tools account and check your Message Center Inbox. If you haven’t gotten a ‘Dear John’ message, you need to run and look at the Overview Page in your Webmaster Tools account to see when you were last indexed by the search engine. Maybe they found something new you added and didn’t like it!
Alternately, you might have tinkered with your robots.txt file, and inadvertently blocked Google from seeing what they needed to see to include you. Double check that you have included and excluded the correct pages for crawling.

Go back over the guidelines. If you haven’t gotten all the rules and regulations memorized, and have been doing a lot of SEO, you might have accidentally-totally without meaning to-blamelessly-on the advice of others-or just in a moment of hot-headedness-done a no-no.

White on white text, lots of reciprocal go-nowhere links, paid for links that you forgot to no-follow; make sure you rule out all the usual suspects. Look over your entire site with an eagle eye, and try to figure out if there is anything that could be construed as non-kosher!

Turn to the Google Webmaster Help Group for additional insight. Googlers and webmasters are often happy to take a look, and a fresh perspective may be able to bring your bobble to light.

Once you know what is wrong, fixing it should be simple. Re-vamp, re-do and re-organize until you meet all specifications, and are completely certain your site will pass the most thorough vetting. Once you feel confident, you can move on to the final step.

Resubmit your site for indexing. This involves going into Google Webmaster tools yet one more time, and clicking on ‘reconsideration request’, following the instructions and crossing your fingers!

Hopefully this will put you back on the SERPs stairway to success, and your worries will be over - as long as you (all together now) ‘Keep your nose clean!’
