Google Profile Adds Visibility

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Google now offers a profile option, to add visibility online and even in Google results. Owners of a Google account may set up a Personal Profile, which is basically a personal home page that includes links to the desired web pages the owner has connection to.

A Google profile may appear at the bottom of the first search results page next to the profile picture. It takes about ten minutes to set up a basic profile page. It’s assumed that this option to add another social profile will add opportunities to link Twitter and Facebook and other profiles together. The Google profile, with incoming links, can pass link juice.

Google’s example is fairly clear-cut: Bio, Contact, Links, Location, etc:

Planet Ocean’s Search Engine Newsletter said

“They know the urge to see yourself listed is enough to cause significant numbers of persons to fill in their profiles, include their likes and locations. From there it’s just another simple step to upload photos to Picasaweb, start using Gmail, Google calendar, Documents, and so forth. Smart, these guys!

Obviously, the possibilities for displaying targeted advertising are immense! And, for anyone who’s noticing this looks a little like the beginning of a Google “Facebook,” all we can say is: Yep!”
