Google I/O 2009 Held In San Francisco

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Google I/O 2009 was held in San Francisco today, Wednesday, and would continue tomorrow (Thursday). Google considers this event as the most important of all its conferences that have been held and those are yet to be held for this year as it considers it as very important for its growth and the prosperity of its business and online services. It was basically trying to attract developers. The discussion was mainly about the future generation of web technologies and other web applications.

In the inaugural speech that took place in 2009, Mr. Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google said that it would be a great opportunity for them to have this conference held with such great developers. He said, “It’s time for us to take advantage of the amazing opportunity that is before us,”. He also said that the future growth in the world of technology would be because of the internet and the browsers than the operating system. He also added saying that this would be the basis for the development of all application development.

But this cannot be accomplished completely as the situation now is not suitable for such a change. Many applications demonstrated now are still dependent on HTML 5 technologies that are still under development in many of the renowned companies.

The vice president of engineering, Google, Mr. Vic Gundotra, said that the most latest of all the open source web browsers namely Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Opera are all using at least any one of the HTML 5 technologies. These browsers have used HTML 5 as they need the system to be more reliable and stable. Another important reason behind is that they are all using this composition for proving that they are far ahead of Microsoft’s internet explorer.

They also discussed on the advantage of using the appropriate HTML 5 tags. Mr. Gundotra explained on web applications can be developed using the most appropriate tags on HTML 5 like the canvas tags, geolocation, web workers, video tags and application caching and database. For instance, web applications can be filled with all types of graphic files and other related files without having to use any plugins. Video files can as well be incorporated using video tags. In the conference, a sample of a YouTube video was shown and explained on how video tags can be used to get that effect and feel. This would also give the developers some more options to have the videos embedded in the web page.

Geolocation is the other major topic of discussion as it takes care of all the related features in mobile applications. A demo of the Google Latitude application was also presented in order to show how it has influenced the mobile sector as well. Mr. Jay Sullivan of Mozilla explained on how FireFox 3.5 will allow the browser itself to point out the location in Google Maps. The system would be using Wi-Fi and the position data on the cell tower positioning data.
