Google In Quotes September 24th, 2008

Google recently has added to its collection a new website called In Quotes. This website will gather all the quotes from some of the famous leaders. It does not stop with collection of the quotes; it also compares the quotes side by side. The quotes are categorized under various topics.

You can find the new quotes website at http://labs.google.com/inquotes. This new website will be available for the leaders of Canada, Great Britain and India with their political leaders.

The quotes are aggregated from various news sites and other sources; the default configuration of this quote takes us to the quotes from the US leaders. In Quotes for the US presidential candidates are presented under 20 issues that they have talked about. Each quote comes with a Spin button which will rotate the quotes under the same category. Google computers aggregate all the related quotes on each topic that are linked to the candidates. This forms a compendium of quotes on the given topic by a specific leader. Under each quote the date on which it was said and the source from where the quote is aggregated are displayed.

It is also possible to make specific searches using the search tool that is provided in this website. You can select your leaders to compare using the drop down select button. So it is possible to compare quotes on all the available topics. Some of the popular topics listed in the US edition of In Quotes include, abortion, Bush, change, economy, education, election, energy, environment, health care, housing, human rights, immigration, Iran, Iraq, marriage, oil, president, recession, social security and taxes. The list of popular topic as you can expect varies from one edition to the other.

To protect itself, Google adds a disclaimer at the end of the page stating, “Quotes and their speakers are determined automatically by a computer program and we don’t guarantee the completeness or accuracy of the information you may see. The dates you see represent when the article in which the quote appears was added to Google News.”

Google In Quotes will help us understand and analyze the stand of different politicians on various issues. This will also help us see how coherent they are in terms of the principles that they hold on to if any! We can also see the discrepancies in their speeches. These quotes are from all the stories that are linked to from Google News. Some of them are direct quotes and some of them are as reported by the journalists. Often the quotes that are reported by journalists will be heavily biased towards a certain stand point. So it is important to get to the source and see the quote in context. Google computers compiles all the famous sayings and quotations that are attributed to the featured leaders from online news.

If you happen to find a wrong quote you can report it to Google by filling the form at http://www.google.com/support/news/bin/request.py?contact_type=report_news. We need to wait and see what Google’s actual plans are in releasing a quotes site. As of now it is not serving any ads in these pages.
