Google Cuts Down Its Work Forces

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

After a long discussion and effort to reduce the number of staff, temporary staff and other candidates working as interns in Google, Google has finally decided and announced on Wednesday that nearly 100 full positions in the recruiting group would be terminated. This elimination process has been set as a goal to reduce the overhead costs that the company has been incurring all these days.

In a message being posted in a blog by Lazlo Bock, the Vice President of people operations of Google has said that they do not need so many people in the recruiting group as they have any reduced the number of people they are hiring at the first place. Therefore, they now feel that few people would be sufficient to take care of the recruitment process. He has also said that to start with they have cancelled all their contractors with private or external recruitment agencies those were carrying the recruitment process for Google. Apart from this, Mr. Lazlo Bock added to his message that they had regretfully decided to reduce approximately hundred positions from the recruitment group. He has also mentioned his sympathy for those staff that would be losing their jobs. However, at the same time, he has also specified that he hopes that they people would be able to find some other position in Google itself.

Google started this discussion about reducing its contract workers and temporary staff in spring last year. This decision was taken as Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google in San Jose Mercury News mentioned that they have more than 10,000 temporary workers at Google. Therefore, this discussion and decision has been taken as a measure to reduce the expenses that are in fact spent unnecessarily. A recent report on details (SEC filling) about Google’s staff and temporary workforce has revealed that it has 4,300 temporary staff and contractors and more 24,000 permanent employees.

Google is basically planning to reduce the overhead cost and reducing the temporary workers’ head count is a main goal to reduce the cost. Senior VP of research and engineering of Google Mr. Alan Eustace has also mentioned in a blog post that they have asked 70 engineers working for Google in Texas, Luleas, Austin, Sweden, Norway and Trondheim have been asked to shift to the new offices. So this as well is to reduce the overhead cost. One of the Google’s spokes person also confirmed the same.

He also said that Google is able to understand how hurt, sad and worried Google families would feel but that they might not be able to have all of these exceptional staff.

“We do recognize the upheaval and heartache that these changes may have on Google families, and that we may not be able to keep 100% of these exceptional employees,” he said. Google has been scheduled to submit its fourth quarter’s financial result the coming week.
