Is Clicker the end of TV Guide? Probably not, but it’s pretty neat.
The ‘TV guide for the internet’ is such a small way to describe the thing which is Clicker. This website has been launched as so much more than that; many new features and additional content have been added, making the paper version dwindle in comparison.
Jim Lanzone (CEO of Clicker, previous CEO of Ask) is ecstatic, he describes Clicker as a complete, structured yet highly comprehensive and unbiased programming guide for internet television! Clicker is indeed a revolutionary idea, and the first real gathering together of the information needed. The company’s press release says that Clicker can be called the ‘complete programming guide for internet television’.
Clicker initially seems to present as a more organized YouTube or Hulu; but it covers a lot more- notably local television, programming, and all in an easily searchable forma. It’s fresh, innovative and really, really cool.
Online television watching is the future, 168 million US residents watch TV online now, and the number is growing exponentially. The structured data approach of Clicker is intended to provide easily accessible and understandable information about TV programs and related content as the ultimate TV programming guide.
According to paid content.org, the TV guide was in beta in September – they reported:
Next up for former Ask.com CEO Jim Lanzone: Clicker, a startup that promises to be a TV guide of sorts for video content online. Lanzone, who leads Clicker as CEO, introduced the startup’s service at TechCrunch 50, explaining that it provides a structured way to search for available video content across the web. A deal with Boxee will also let users search Clicker from their TV sets.
The service is currently in private beta. It’s ad supported, but Lanzone said the company is also planning to introduce a paid “Pro version,” which will presumably have some additional features. He also said Clicker had raised $8 million in a round earlier this year
