Google has now announced its plan for extensions in Chrome. The extensions are mainly featured to allow the user to customize the functionality of the Chrome suiting their individual requirements. Google has also published in a document that Chrome would not have bulks of extensions like Mozilla Firefox but would have extensions that would really be of use to the users and those that would be inevitable. In another announcement, Google has mentioned that these features have been built in order to help those users from other browsers who are used to certain important, rather a must, features and expect the same from Chrome as well.
An important feature that Chrome is supporting is a blocker that would block popping up ads and flashy visuals of advertisements. Though the company actually depends on advertisements, the company still wants to introduce the feature in order to help the users who hate popping advertisements. These features fall under the content filtering category. The category also has privacy control and parental control. Google has also specified it’s support for other features like navigational tools, book marking, helping users while downloading, content enhancements, Skype extensions, RealPlayer extensions, web based history and many more.
These extensions have been developed and included as these extension have been requested by the users and Google itself also found the need for such features to be inevitable. Google has specified in its documents that the extensions should all be updated quietly without any publicity just like the way Chrome is being updated. This point has been insisted just for security reasons. The installation is also planned to be made less complicated, that is, the installation would require. It is planned and proposed to support rich user interface that would even accommodate extensions that can be downloaded as required and be a part of Chrome extensions.
As far as the interface is considered, the interface is going to be clean with few important operational tools like tools sidebars, toolbars, content filtering tools, etc. Google has also specified that some interfaces like ‘access to mail.google.com’ and ‘access to the history database’ would require the user’s permission to be displayed. Google will act as a central service that would offer all the updates in extensions to the users, would also blacklist all malicious and harmful extensions, and would not allow the browser to have them installed. They have also mentioned that they might in future have a front end developed for users to themselves locate the latest extensions and opt to use only those they wish use and find useful.
In simple, the main goals are to have extensions developed that would be simple to install just as easy as we find any web application to install and use. Useful extensions that are not too heavy; they are also planned and develop with the point in mind that they do not crash in the midst of the process and hang the browser. The proposed user front end to select the required extensions alone is expected to bring a great difference in the usage of extensions by the users.
