Google is now taking efforts to explain on how it is planning to have searchable books can be marketed and sold online in a beneficial way that it would profit everyone concerned. Mr. Dan Clancy, the engineering director for Google Book Search said at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California said about his company’s efforts towards scanning of books and its target to become a seller of digital books.
Google Print was the actual name of Google Book Search. This was the name that was used when it was launched in 2004. Google during that time scanned a number of books converting them into text and then scanning the text using character recognition technology. This would make the books searchable and could be used like any other normal content. But what happened last time was that publishers and their lawyers objected Google’s act of scanning all the books and making them searchable without appropriate permission of copyright holders.
However, Mr. Clancy said that Google has currently scanned more than 10 million books that include nearly 1.5 million public domain books and 1.5 books that belong to authors and publishers who are partners in Google’s Book Search. These are authors and publishers who have agreed to allow Google to scan their books and index them. The authors and publishers have agreed for the deal, as they are aware that this would create more visibility for their books, increase ad revenue and also increase chances of having more sales.
Google has actually had a discussion with the authors and publishers who raised questions and brought the lawsuit were all convinced and they all came to an agreement in front of the judge. But an antitrust inquiry has also been set by the U.S Department of Justice to investigate about the deal.
The main objections that rose in this case were about the privacy. Google has been ordered to provide access to the scanned materials. In simple, the authors and publishers would as well be able to access the scanned text of the books with any issues.
There were also appositions and objection from competitors, they tried creating problems and other passing on comments that would indirectly weaken Google and stop the progress. But Google seemed to be very determined and made its way. To avoid all these unnecessary issues to gain the support of the common readers, who are their main targets, Google has uploaded a video in YouTube. This video includes testimonials from Howard University Law professors who are talking about the importance of book search service offered by Google and how useful the service would be to students and others who wish to enhance their knowledge by reading books online.
