Gmail Confronts Problem Again

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Out of 150 million subscribers of Gmail, majority of them faced some problem that can was caused due t some miscalculations. Gmail’s engineering team has been found to be responsible for the errors caused. However, Gmail has issued an apology for everything that has happened as most of its customers have suffered due to the problems that had arisen.
Gmail has agreed and accepted that the two hour outage that had happened to be a ‘big deal’ and has apologized for the inconvenience caused. It has been reported that the problem has been caused during the regular updates to the web servers of the company. The Gmail team has also assured that it would take care of the problem and see to that it does not happen again. Anyway, this is not the first time that Gmail is encountering like this.
Mr. Ben Treynor of Gmail has written in a blog spot both apologizing and assuring that they would make sure that it does not happen again. He has said, “We know how many people rely on Gmail for personal and professional communications, and we take it very seriously when there’s a problem with the service. Thus, right up front, I’d like to apologise to all of you – today’s outage was a big deal, and we’re treating it as such.” Similar Gmail service outage had already been experienced by Gmail users in February and March as well.
Explaining about the cause for the problem, Mr. Ben Treynor said that it happened when some of the Gmail servers were taken offline by the engineers for the routine upgrade. Being more specific about the problem, Mr. Treynor said that what happened was actually not a problem but a result of overload. The upgrade process is a routine process and the Gmail’s web interface running in many locations would send in traffic from the offline servers to the locations where the servers are online. The actual problem is that the engineers have underestimated the load that the other servers would be able to withstand for a given amount of time. this overload has lead to the problem and the outage of service.
Microsoft and Yahoo have ranked the free version of worldwide to be the third largest email service program with millions of users after their products (Hotmail and Yahoo Mail) that are launched. Similar technical problems have also been noticed earlier in May on the mail search page, Gmail and Google News and even last time, millions of users who depend on Gmail suffered a lot. However, as the Gmail has officially announced that it would take care, users a feeling relaxed hoping that it would happen again.
