Facebook Gets a Wrist Slap

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Facebook just can’t stay out of the news!  What’s up with the social network? Well, they are up to 250 million users already - a huge increase this year since just 150 million in January.

They are also exploring their own Twitter interface so you can update instantly without using an outside app, and test driving virtual currency.

Unfortunately,Facebook is in a bit of a hotseat due to recent events that aren’t so pleasant.

Justin Michael, mayoral candidate in Santa Barbar, got his account hacked, causing an uproar and no end of attacks by those who feel Facebook doesn’t do nearly enough to protect users.

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada agrees:

“It’s clear that privacy issues are top of mind for Facebook, and yet we found serious privacy gaps in the way the site operates,” Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart said in a statement.

Assistant Commissioner Elizabeth Denham softened the blow with her own statement, saying that:

“Social networking sites can be a wonderful way to connect,” and “We urge Facebook to implement all of our recommendations to further enhance their site, ensure they are in compliance with privacy law, and ultimately show themselves as models of privacy.”

In the meantime, lawsuits keep popping up against the social network – the latest include lawsuits from Power.com (an aggragator site) and advertizer RootZoo, who claims the company defrauded them by reporting and charging for extra clicks.
