Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Silverlight a Microsoft’s baby is likely to feed on Google power. It is hard to believe but it is part of reality. Silverlight videos are going to get feeders from Google’s DoubleClick ad servers. NBC Universal is the uniting factor which is planning to use Silverlight for its online coverage of 2008 Olympics.

Its good news for the game lovers who will be getting uninterrupted 2008 Olympic coverage in a variety of forms including online video, television and mobile video. NBC is up to no charity work but to exploit every opportunity for its own benefit. NBC after a thorough review of all the resources available at hand decided to go with Microsoft’s Silverlight technology to support its mega project. Google’s DoubleClick technology is going to help funding the project partially through the advertising revenue generated through Google’s DoubleClick technology. Undoubtedly, this is the first liaison of its kind in Google’s history to open up to Silverlight content to advertisers via DoubleClick. This is going to support at least 2500 hours of video coverage which is going to be part of NBC’s Olympics coverage.

Many online publishers use DoubleClick In-Stream video ad serving technology as one of the most reliable solutions for their video files in Flash, Windows Media, Real Media formats and now to add to this list, Microsoft’s Silverlight Video players is joining the club with the efforts of NBC. NBC is more than proud to bring about this tie up, it rightfully boasts of the new capabilities it is bringing to the Internet community.

According to Steven Gold, NBC Universal Digital Media’s VP – Sales Planning and Operation, NBC decided for this combination because they were looking for a reliable partner who could provide, integrated, scalable and robust solution and who else could fit in such stringent criteria other than Google because they know what it means to deal with thousands of advertisers, large site traffic spikes and dealing with multiple platforms. NBC is certainly just more than happy that Google agreed to support their mega feat and they thanked the DoubleClick In-Stream technology for extending their support to Silverlight. One of the advantages for NBC by this support from Google’s DoubleClick In-Stream technology is that they can stick to the platform that they are already used to and they do not have to make any mega technology shift. It makes it very easy for NBC to monetize on their revolutionary, online coverage of the Olympics without any problem as they use Silverlight already for their display and mobile advertising.

Whatever be the motives of NBC, 2008 Beijing Olympics is going to be an exciting Olympics with the coverage from NBC. Olympics will become easily accessible for more people around the world. However, we will have to endure the advertisements during the coverage which we cannot avoid because that is the only way NBC is going to generate some sizable revenue for its own operation. After this we can expect further benefits and challenges to the Internet and the SEO / SEM community.
