In a case that echoes an attempt to trademark the term SEO by one Jason Gambert, Dell is now trying to lay claim to the term ‘cloud computing’.
Unfortunately for Dell, as in Gambert’s case it’s a matter of too little, too late.
‘Cloud computing’ has rapidly become a generic term and has been used by many main competitors in the technology industry, and it was so ruled by the Trademark Office. Dell is of course expected top appeal, but the odds of them pulling it off are slim.
The idea behind cloud computing is to offer technological support to a wide band of users who alone wouldn’t have the know how or resources to perform some functions alone.
This ability to operate ‘within the cloud’ is a large part of the reason internet ability has increased exponentially for the average Joe over the past few years.
Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, Intel and IBM are only a few innovators in the field, so it looks like Dell is late to their own game. The technology infrastructure has adopted cloud computing on a vast scale, and attempts to patent it are a little behind the curve.
