The former head of Google China has announced that China has approved and would be encouraging Google’ effort to filter porn from the results that are generated from its China portal. This has been approved after the state led criticism of the links.
In a Chinese blog the former president of Greater China for Google, Mr. Kai-Fu Lee has written that the government censors has met with Google and revoked suspension of few features that were there on the site. Mr. Kai-Fu Lee has written about it in detail in his blog.
Google.cn that is Google’s China portal was slammed by the Chinese government and State-run media when pornographic links were allowed to appear in its search results. The Chinese government had even briefly blocked usage of Google.com nationwide, and other Google’s websites. They had even asked Google to suspend all foreign website site search services until all the links were removed. The Chinese government was very serious about the issue and wanted the changes to be done by Google immediately.
Google as well considered the warning serious and had worked out hard and changed the search algorithms to filter pornographic search results. However, Google was still not sure on whether the censors would still be satisfied. However, to the surprise of Google, the censors were satisfied and Chinese government was happy too. Mr. Kai-Fu Lee has said that multiple heads of the government bureaus revoked the suspensions that were laid upon Google. He has said that they did also praise for its efforts and the serious attitude fighting against the pornographic issue.
Mr. Kai-Fu Lee had left Google China a week ago. However, he has mentioned in his blog post that it has nothing to do with the issue that Google had with the Chinese government. In fact, he wanted to leave Google before two weeks ago but had stayed with Google two weeks more. He has said in his blog post that he would be starting a venture in Beijing that would aim at guiding young local entrepreneurs and improving their knowledge on investment and other related areas.
Even before this Google.cn has long back filtered search results for some of the sensitive searches like that of political leaders and other terms that has been restricted by the rules and regulations of the Chinese government for many legal reasons. When users search for any such term, the results page would display the following message, “may touch on content that does not conform to the related laws, regulations and policies” and that the required search results cannot be displayed. The search giant has been instructed that being a global company, “Google should strictly comply with local laws, regulations and policies.”. Even, Baidu, a dominant search engine in China also follows the same rules and filters results.
