Bing vs. Yahoo – Bing Takes The Lead

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

As per the recent report posted by StatCounter Bing takes the lead in its race with Yahoo. The report says that Bing has taken this lead place globally for the first time. Recently Microsoft has been has been spending a considerable amount of money on its search engine Bing to improve the search quality and to market its search engine worldwide. All its efforts seem to have paid Bing richly.
In February 2011, Bing’s market share reached 4.37 whereas Yahoo’s market share remained at 3.93%. However, it has to be noted that in the US, Yahoo still was leading at 9.74% and Bing was at 9.03%. What needs to be noted here is that Bing is powering Yahoo’s search in this region.

When compared to Google’s market share which is close to 90%, both search engines Bing and Yahoo have lot to aspire and work for. As of the current status Bing takes the second position in the internet search industry though the gulf between the first position and the second position being tremendously high.
Though both Yahoo and Bing are striving hard to fight for this first position, given the current trends in the search industry, it is unlikely to see Google in any other position than its current position.

StatCounter’s report indicates that Bing is determined to reduce Google’s market share in the coming months. Bing expected that the recent criticism served against this search giant on the quality of the search results may spin a favorable turn for the company but Google managed to survive this blow with great resilience. Added to that, Google has also taken number of efforts to deal with the criticisms in a pro-active way and improve its search quality. One of the efforts from Google along these lines was Google Chrome plug-in that allows users to block websites in their individual search. We also saw recently that Google has made some major changes to its algorithm to keep away poor quality sites. All these swift efforts from Google have indeed stabilized its position.

Bing however after a long time has received some good news in its ventures in the search industry. With unswerving efforts Bing has the potential to reduce Google’s market share. Though Bing may not dethrone Google overnight, with strategic moves this search engine will be able to see considerable progress in this direction.
Bing has to come up with many value add services along with its search services to attract more customers. Bing is constantly trying to bolster its presence in the regions in which it has favorable position. It is important to retain the current status in the regions in which it is already stronger so that its market share will not drop down when it is still trying to improve its market share in the regions in which it has weaker presence. Asia may be a good place for Bing to concentrate where diverse search engines are competing in this region.
