Microsoft presented Bing 2.0 at TechCrunch50. The engine is also known as Bing Visual Search, and allows people to “search by picture.” A sneak preview of Visual Search in August laid the groundwork for the release, which is expected to be the first of many.
Bing Visual Search is designed to allow searchers to comfortably and quickly browse through “structured data sets from trusted partners” powered by Sliverlight technology. Bing Visual Search will appear on the homepage search categories below the Travel search tab.
When Visual Search data is available for general web search queries, a teaser will be apparent in the results for further exploration.
Users must have Silverlight installed on their browsers to fully experience Visual Search; despite early resistance to Silverlight (which many felt was being ‘crammed down the throats of internet users’ by Microsoft, apparently nearly 73% of users have adopted it – most signing up since NBCOlympics.com was using it for live streaming and on-demand video coverage during Beijing 2008 (and will likely repeat the pattern for Vancouver 2010.)
Right now, Bing Visual Search is primarily being used for novelty-type searches. Sports is big, with fantasy football in full swing.
The initial galleries in Bing Visual Search are admittedly limited, but this roll out does include 231 travel destinations. Clicking on a destination provides standard search results, which can be sorted by popularity of travel destination. Some data that appears in the search box when you roll over travel set choices appears to be IP driven – it lcan let you know there is an approximately one hour flight time from Salt Lake City (SLC) to McCarran (LAS) if you are searching from Utah (according to Search Engine Land). M) requiring at least one stop over. But not all locations provide an approximate flight time.
There are also filters by best time to visit.

Many feel Bing will integrate more functionality too late for this season’s shoppers and vacationers, but it can be a handy tool.
