Bing Found To Be Advertising For Rogue Pharmacies

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Microsoft is all set with its new search engine Bing to fight against its competitors and trying hard to get its position back in the search industry. Now, Microsoft is also trying to put in some efforts to eradicate illicit pharmacies operating on the internet with their fake ads.
Attention has been diverted towards Bing after the results of a study has been released and examined Microsoft’s Bing to be having Internet pharmacy ads. This study has been conducted by an online pharmacy verification service LegitScript along with KnujOn that is an internet compliance company. The results and the figures that came out of it were shocking to look at as it was found that more than 90 percent of the online pharmacy advertisements that were viewed were fake and internet pharmacies that were illegal without any approved license. The study also revealed that most of the internet pharmacy ads that were displayed as sponsored ads on Microsoft’s improved version of search engine Bing were found to be illegal and that the pharmacy company did not require a valid prescription for purchase.
These sponsored ads that are found on the alongside of noncommercial links on the top search results pages of the search engine. Companies pay the search engines for displaying these ads on their results page. The study that has been conducted by LegitScript and KnujOn reveals that such sponsored ads that are found on Bing are fake and are advertised by internet pharmacies that are not authorized.
Speaking about the issue Mr. John Horton, the President of LegitScript has told the media that during the tests that were conducted, he said, “We were able to purchase potentially addictive drugs without a prescription or any age verification via Bing.com ads. We also received counterfeit medication. Microsoft profits from these illegal ads, which put Internet users at risk.” This is definitely a very big risk as most of the internet users who purchase drugs online do not have any idea about the qualities and after effects of the medicines and when bought without any prescription, these medicines might be hazardous to life.
However, the fact is that it is not only Bing that is advertising on behalf of these illicit pharmacies but the list of search engines also includes Google on the first place and also Yahoo. This clearly shows much search engines have been irresponsible and keen only on making money through these sponsored ads.
The executive director of the trade group National Association of Boards of Pharmacies, Mr. Carmen Catizone has said about the results of the study that, “At the present time, the Internet has become a haven for drug seekers and abusers, particularly (regarding) controlled substances. It is a much more serious and dangerous phase of the Internet.”
