In SEO news, pop starlet Justin Bieber was announced as the most searched person on Microsoft’s search engine Bing for the year of 2011. While this is valuable information for anyone targeting the tween audience for traffic, it has begged the question “ why?” more often than anything else. Jokes aside, Justine Bieber leading searches for people is not something that really should have been too terribly surprising. While we may wish that mantle fell upon a person like the Dali Lama, it’s the Beebs or nothing it would seem. How did it happen?
A big part of the massive searches for Justin Bieber has to do with how many jokes she is the butt of. People are constantly looking for jokes about Bieber – many are pretty darn entertaining! Add in the searches for images of Bieber that people seemingly cannot get enough of – for shortstopping purposes to create more jokes, his actual fan base and that he does wind up in the gossipy tabloid type of articles along with some real news and you have a name people are constantly tapping into that search bar.
The next thing to consider is timing. There were plenty of rumors about Bieber being a baby daddy which was amazing considering everyone thought for sure she was a girl. She was on the 10 hottest women on the web list in 2010 – no joke! Selena Gomez is hotter than ever and Bieber is tied to her so there is more traffic on that. Bieber is touring in an attempt to squeeze every dollar possible out of her career before puberty wrecks her look and voice and there is plenty of tour promo information floating around.
Finally consider, like it or not, Bieber sells a lot of product! Music, posters, tee-shirts, dolls whatever her name or face can be slapped on is being marketed. Her music appearing on Glee before that show jumped the shark didn’t hurt either. Don’t forget her film “Never Say Never”, because that was worth plenty of searches for laughs as well. Add it all up and you have the perfect storm for a heavy search product.
Look at it this way – it wasn’t an entertainer like Lady Gaga or Rihanna that could match up – they are too well liked. The President of the USA couldn’t even match the irresistible power that is the Beebs- and everyone makes fun of the President. To be the most searched person on the web, or Bing at least, you need to have a rabid fan base, you need to be a person people actually enjoy making fun of, need to be in the legitimate news and you need to be in the sensationalistic tabloid genre as well. And you need to do it almost every single day. It also doesn’t hurt that the Beebs is as cute a young girl as you will find – those image searches count too!
