Adsense for Games October 10th, 2008

Google never seems to stop, it is one of very active companies on the web that never stops coming up with new features and new ways of expanding its business. No other company has shown interests to expand at this pace. In the latest of Google’s list is the adsense for games. The new feature will allow the game developers to insert ads in their games - more money for game owners and more space and more money for Google to place its ads.

If you are a game developer you can now add adsense in your video games. Revenue generation will be for both cost per impression and cost per click like in all other Google adsense ads. The revenue generated will be shared between Google and the developer; the percentage of sharing is yet to be announced.
According to Google, “With this program, advertisers can now reach the growing number of gamers who are engaged in online play”.

The advertiser will be able make use of this new feature to insert their logo in the sports events that come with online games. Google currently has very little competition in this area as this market is not yet been explored by many. Sony seems to have already stepped into this area last year and launched its in-game advertising.

Google’s interest in this area has already been noted last year when it bought AdScape media. After a yearlong wait and rumors Google has finally announced its new program on adsense for games. According to one of the latest statistics over 25% of online users play online games and this gives Google over 200 million people to advertise. The new game developer’s kit will allow the game developers to include text, video and picture ads in their games. We need to wait for little longer to see what kind of customization is possible within games. We know that the regular adsense for content comes with a great customization tool but whether such customizations will be possible for ads within games is still a question and we need to wait for Google’s actual tool.

Though there are 200 million people playing online it is not all 200 million who will get to see the adsense ads. The adsense ads are limited to selective games that fit Google’s criteria. Only Flash based games qualify for this program. Moreover, only those games that have over 500,000 plays per day qualify for the adsense for games program. Besides that the game should have at least 80% of its users in the US or UK. As of now Google is concentrating on US and UK based players. Therefore, the overall reach of the adsense ads will be reduced dramatically. However, this move is expected to open up further avenues to Google adsense program and online gaming advertisements in general. More companies are expected to join Google soon. With this move of Google many new UK and US based companies are expected to jump into online gaming industry to earn some revenue.
