Bing Shopping Making a Mark

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Microsoft’s hard push for their new search engine Bing is starting to pay off.  The latest Hitwise statistics on comparison shopping tools shows Bing’s vertical search is actually doing quite well; also Bing Shopping’s market share has increased from the week ending June 6 to the week ending August 8.This is good news for Bing, which was expected to peak and then drop off in the face of Google’s Caffeine.

Hitwise’s data showed that Bing Shopping’s market share increased by 169% from the week ending June 6 to the week ending August 8. This makes Bing the overall most visited comparison shopping tool. Bing Shopping had formerly held the number 8 spot.

An interesting factopr is that visits to the other comparison shopping tools declined due to the increase in Bing Shopping’s visitors, showing a measurable effect and not just a fad of people checking out the new kid on the block. Consumers seem to actually be switching to and using Bing’s offering. 5.85% of the visitors to Bing Shopping defected from Google with 75.01% of them being new users, and 3.54% came from Yahoo! Search with 68.41% of them being new users. The rest of the visitors to Bing Shopping came from Bing (66.81% new users) and  MSN (49.88% new users).

This data is the first real data that shows Bing may really be around to stay, and actually compete with Google by stealing some of their share of the traffic.
