Another update on top searches in 2008, this time from Yahoo. The lists from 2007 and 2008 have just a few differences…
2008: 2007:
1. Britney Spears 1. Britney Spears
2. WWE 2. WWE
3. Barack Obama 3. Paris Hilton
4. Miley Cyrus 4. Naruto
5. RuneScape 5. Beyonce
6. Jessica Alba 6. Lindsay Lohan
7. Naruto 7. RuneScape
8. Lindsay Lohan 8. Fantasy Football
9. Angelina Jolie 9. Fergie
10. American Idol 10. Jessica Alba
Amazing that Britney pulls it off year after year – and beats out WWE. Obama kicked Paris Hilton completely off the list while Miley Cyrus apparently did the same for Beyonce. Angelina Jolie made the list as Hollywood’s’ highest paid actress and of course don’t forget the ongoing baby drama. Fergie dropped down a few spots to fall of the bottom, but American Idol made a comeback. Lindsay Lohan and Jessica Alba shuffled the deck, while Naruto and RuneScape basically switched seats.
What does this prove? That the younger generation and the nerds are still the ones who search the most on the internet, so obviously the time to target that audience is now. Social networking, ads that appeal to the Gen X and Gen Y crowd and a hipper attitude across the board is what is needed to compete in today’s highly competitive online market.
Next year what will the top searches be? No-one can know for sure, but studying past trends, particularly in vertical markets, can give some insight as to where to focus you attempts.
