Google’s Book Business Would Soon Be Introduced With New Plans July 31st, 2009

Google is now taking efforts to explain on how it is planning to have searchable books can be marketed and sold online in a beneficial way that it would profit everyone concerned. Mr. Dan Clancy, the engineering director for Google Book Search said at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California said about his company’s efforts towards scanning of books and its target to become a seller of digital books.
Google Print was the actual name of Google Book Search. This was the name that was used when it was launched in 2004. Google during that time scanned a number of books converting them into text and then scanning the text using character recognition technology. This would make the books searchable and could be used like any other normal content. But what happened last time was that publishers and their lawyers objected Google’s act of scanning all the books and making them searchable without appropriate permission of copyright holders.
However, Mr. Clancy said that Google has currently scanned more than 10 million books that include nearly 1.5 million public domain books and 1.5 books that belong to authors and publishers who are partners in Google’s Book Search. These are authors and publishers who have agreed to allow Google to scan their books and index them. The authors and publishers have agreed for the deal, as they are aware that this would create more visibility for their books, increase ad revenue and also increase chances of having more sales.
Google has actually had a discussion with the authors and publishers who raised questions and brought the lawsuit were all convinced and they all came to an agreement in front of the judge. But an antitrust inquiry has also been set by the U.S Department of Justice to investigate about the deal.
The main objections that rose in this case were about the privacy. Google has been ordered to provide access to the scanned materials. In simple, the authors and publishers would as well be able to access the scanned text of the books with any issues.
There were also appositions and objection from competitors, they tried creating problems and other passing on comments that would indirectly weaken Google and stop the progress. But Google seemed to be very determined and made its way. To avoid all these unnecessary issues to gain the support of the common readers, who are their main targets, Google has uploaded a video in YouTube. This video includes testimonials from Howard University Law professors who are talking about the importance of book search service offered by Google and how useful the service would be to students and others who wish to enhance their knowledge by reading books online.

Microsoft – Yahoo Partnership Successfully Signed July 29th, 2009

Those who have been following talks between Microsoft and Yahoo on the possible partnership can at last sigh in relief. After several months of continued efforts from these two internet giants, a 10-year partnership has been signed up by Yahoo and Microsoft. These two competitors have joined hands to topple Google monopoly. With this new partnership, the searches on Yahoo.com will be supported by Microsoft’s new search engine Bing. Yahoo will work on getting more premium advertisers for its network.

As per the latest deal, Microsoft has agreed to share with yahoo 88% of its revenue that gets from the searches made in the Yahoo network. In return, Microsoft will be entitled with the right to integrate the search technology of Yahoo in its own search platforms online. Yahoo’s income is likely to go up by $500 million a year. This partnership is likely to restore the share values of Yahoo that has been crumbling. Steve Ballmer in is communication with the media announced that Microsoft will create more innovation in search to add value for the advertisers investments. This will free the consumers from having to depend on a single company.

Both Microsoft and Yahoo have been struggling to fight their single dominant competitor Google for years. These two companies have been toggling back and forth with various partnership deals and nothing materialized until this Wednesday. Yahoo had to do a complete revamp of its management to come up with effective strategies that will attract a workable deal from Microsoft. At last, now these two companies have successfully signed up the deal and waiting to make a difference on the web. This partnership is likely to make the World Wide Web into a different place and the search industry should be prepared to take a new shape. As the Google monopoly is about to be broken down, advertisers expect to benefit from this new partnership.

Yahoo will not be investing more money on its own search technology and it will now rely on Bing. This will bring a considerable amount of savings annually to the company. Yahoo is the second largest search engine but with just 8% of the market share. It has a huge gulf to cover with the topper Google that holds about 70% of the market share. Microsoft is far behind Google and Yahoo with just a 3% market share in the search industry. In partnership, Microsoft and Yahoo hope to increase their market share and eventually catch up with Google. Though Google still has a huge lead margin, it has to tighten its belt to ensure that it continues to be the leader in the search industry. The events that are going to unfold in the upcoming months are sure going to be interesting.

Bing Sweeps India July 28th, 2009

What are people saying about Bing?  Microsoft’s newest search utility has broken into the top-20 websites – in just a month of its launch!  Alexa says that naturally Google dominates the charts, but Bing has already climbed to 19th position with about 5 per cent of users from India accessing internet to visit Bing. Since the launch of Bing in India, the traffic on Microsoft sites has gone up.

Microsoft sites had 2.89 million unique users in May; after the launch of Bing in June, those numbers jumped to 4.9 million! Google sites’ number declined to 32.20 million for June from 33.10 in May. Yahoo! sites had a rise, though not as spectacular as Bing – a 5 per cent jump in unique users from 7.80 million in May to 8.2 million in June.

Can Bing can penetrate into a Google-dominated search market? A few users from India, where it seems to have the firmest foothold, weigh in which search engine they prefer and why. Google still gets a lead, but Bing gets good reviews on several counts and may just require time to catch up:

“Google is a habit!” (Bobby Pawar, Chief Creative Officer, DDB Mudra)

“Bing stands for accuracy – On Google, almost every time, the first link is of Wikipedia.” (Vishal Gondal CEO, Indiagames)

“No reason to shift to Bing; Google is much faster than Bing. It scores on loading, which is a big issue in a country like India.” (Atindriya Bose Country Manager, Playstation, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe)

“Bing’s good, Google better… Google is a habit. Bing does give better results, but the beauty of Google is the integration of several of its applications – I have 117 documents of Google Docs!” (Alok Kejriwal CEO, Contest2Win)

“Switching to Bing difficult… However, once people are more aware of Bing’s service and its benefits, I am sure they will start using it.” (Rohit Ohri Managing Partner, JWT)

With time, Bing may actually overtake Google in India, as Yahoo is edging towards domination in China.

Google Voice iPhone App Not Approved By Apple July 28th, 2009

Google Voice iPhone application has been officially pulled out from the App store by Apple. Apple seems to have rejected Google Voice iPhone App as an iPhone application and the reason presented for rejection is that Google Voice duplicates many features of iPhone. This information has also been confirmed to be true by one of the Google’s spokes person. He has said, “Apple did not approve the Google Voice application we submitted six weeks ago to the Apple iTunes Application Store. We will continue to work to bring our services to iPhone users – for example, by taking advantage of advances in mobile browsers.”
Mr. Richard Chipman from Apple first conveyed this bad news to Mr. Sean Kovacs from Google Voice. Mr. Sean Kovacs has written in his blog, “Richard Chipman from Apple just called – he told me they’re removing GV Mobile from the App Store due to it duplicating features that the iPhone comes with. He did not actually specify which features; I assume it’s the whole app in general. He wouldn’t send a confirmation email either – too scared I would post it [online].”

It has also been noticed that Google’s VoiceCentral that is another voice application launched by Google, GV Mobile and two other applications that have been developed using Google Voice platform has also been removed from iTunes. However, reasons for removing Google Voice applications from the iTunes store have not yet been revealed and remains unclear.

Though, other than the point that Google Voice duplicates features of iPhone, Apple has not officially specified any other reasons for rejection many resources blame Apple’s intention to control iPhone apps. One of the important points that have been strikingly discussed about the rejection is that, the public are feeling that Apple has done this in order to save AT&T. If Google Voice were, permitted Google Voice would be offering all valuable services that come along with it for the users free that would definitely affect the income that is now collected from the users for offering the service by AT&T.

Google Voice that has been launched in the United States recently would pull together multiple phone numbers in which the user might be able to include his or her work and personal mobile numbers and landline numbers and get a single universal number. The best part is that things would be much simpler as this could be managed through the web. Google Voice would offer transcripts of voice mails and also an archive of all the messages that are sent and received. The service also offers low cost long distance international calls that would certainly benefit users. May be, these are all the main points that Apple considered to be a threat to AT&T’s existence and through out Google Voice from the Apple iPhone App store.
