What is Content, Exactly?

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

I think there is a lot of confusion out there as to what content is. You hear ‘Content is King’ all the time – what does that mean?

There are different types of content. When an SEO is talking about your content, they are referring to anything out on the web that refers to YOU, your website, your product, services or brand.

The first content is usually the content on your website. The home page is one of the most important places for good content! You need it to be interesting and useful, have a hook to draw the user in and be appealing enough to the eye with a good layout and format.

The next step of content is the deeper pages on your site. Many times this will be your pre-sell pages, and ay be linked to from out on the web so they will be landing pages as well. They keyword density may be higher if you are trying to rank these pages independently for search terms, but be extra careful about not stuffing any pages on your site!

Next you have your content out on the web. Articles for distribution are the hot ticket right now – each article should be as high quality as possible to convince the reader to click through to your site. Don’t be tempted to cut corners here – all the content on your site will be considered to be representative of your site.

There are other things you can do as well in the way of external content: Squidoo and wikis are popular, and having your own blog is ideal. Don’t forget to keep SEO in mind for all of your projects so they also have a chance of ranking both on the engine and even individually within the Squidoo, blogging or wiki networks – this means learning how to tag effectively.

You can also do short blog comments or forums posts when it is allowed – these are often widely read and are a good place to make an appearance. They can also be a good place to get organic links from readers who decide to add you to their list. Don’t forget that an RSS feed is a great way to add links!

Email is another avenue of content – this is very important and has nothing to do with keywords except as they might be considered buzz words, but this content can be passed around and you want it to reflect well on you and your site. A newsletter is a fantastic way to keep in touch with your customers and offer tips and how to information while plugging your latest sale or service.

You can also post the newsletter on your site or blog, and that will help you have new content on an ongoing basis. Fresh content is important to the search engines – it shows them you are alive and kicking.

Content is the keystone of the internet, and if you can have the most relevant, high quality in your chosen niche you will have taken a big step towards becoming the authority in your field.
