Taking Back the Blog September 28th, 2008

I know I keep harping on the importance of a blog to boost the success of your website. You can do so many things with a blog to drive traffic and attract visitors – some blogs even achieve independent page rank as people link readily to blogs and the network is even more fluid than elsewhere on the web.

For example, if you have a website devoted to camping gear, having a blog on the subject of camping is a great idea. Here is a multimillion dollar industry, with a huge network of campers ready and waiting for content. If you can provide a smarty, savvy blog with creative content and get people linking to you, you can probably count on a lot of folks heading on over to your site to see what you offer in the way of gear.

A blog is a great place to write reviews, have personal accounts of funny happenings, post hilarious pics and videos, and in general do all that loose, fun stuff that you might feel is too relaxed and unprofessional for your site.

Remember, you are selling to people, and they will relate to you as a person if you let the see that side, and trust you as a consumer if your website itself is highly professional. Using a fun, attractive blog to counterbalance a no-nonsense, clean cut site is a great way to achieve your goals.

Sometimes blogs get neglected, or they simply are mismanaged or allowed to run amok. You have to take your blog seriously if you are planning to use it as a serious tool for traffic and promotion of your main site you have to take as much care with it as you do the other.

Making sure you build your blog well, providing fresh content on a regular basis and popping in now and again to answer or moderate comments is a must. If you can devote even just a fifteen minute slice of each day to it, you might even decide to open a forum and try to get a loyal host of followers to drop in and discuss their experiences, but monitoring is a huge part of having a forum and you will have to be committed to making it work.

Once you have your blog up and running, try to mirror everything you do on your main site. If you have a new product or service, blog about it. If you open a new webpage or article page, try to make a blog post on the same subject. If you get two links allowed in a distributed article or press release, consider earmarking one for your blog.

Remember, bloggers love other bloggers, so visit related blogs and get involved. Offer to guest blog, and invite others to guest for you. (If they seem to busy, take it in stride, and keep offering – they will come around.)

You can even use your blog as a place to offer services to other bloggers, and keep growing your network. Take back your blog today and turn it into a powerhouse. tyou will be surprised at what you can accomplish when you start looking at your blog as a tool rather than a hobby.
