Every SEO’s New Year Resolution for 2010 seems to be centered around Social Media – do more, learn more, spend more. What is really important and what is simply window dressing? Let’s take a look at six surefire ways to boost social media and really make a difference.

Traditional ad budget needs to be diverted to customer service. In a McKinsey report, 67% of consumer sales are directly influenced by word of mouth. Treat your customers properly, and you won’t be running around trying to do damage control.

Educate and train your staff. Check on your workers, know what is going on, and quash any tendency of breaking terms of use, acting inappropriately, providing inaccurate information, etc. If inadvertently or intentionally misused, social media has the power to severely harm a brand

Track mentions and conversations going on about you, your company or your brand. Also track broad keywords and engage customers who are looking for help.

Protect your brand names – if you have a trademarked term, reserve usernames across hundreds of sites and prevent those from stealing your brand. There are tools to do this.

Promote your social profiles constantly! Advertising in any form is good. Spending money for exposure to targeted audiences could be profitable – more so that stubbornly plugging your site alone.

Have exclusive rewards for loyal fans, and they will become customers.This can “demonstrate value” and make fans feel good about following you and that they are getting a special connection that not everyone has access to.
