Possible SEO Leanings – 2009 December 31st, 2008

As per the analysis reports of SEO experts, 2009 will elicit unique SEO patterns from the ambitious webmasters. It is expected that webmasters will make vigorous SEO efforts like never before. Some of the driving forces for this tendency include increasing online competition and drooping sales level that has resulted as an aftermath of the recession. To combat these forces webmasters are expected to make twice the SEO efforts they made in 2008.

Websites will continue to pay attention to the content of the websites and make them more relevant to the search engines. There will be a considerable amount of departure in the optimization efforts in terms of the choice of keywords. As the web is already saturated with single word keywords and primary keywords, concentration in 2009 will be on the secondary keywords and longer keyword phrases. Semantics is expected to play a great role in the content optimization. As you plan your SEO efforts, you must make sure to face this changing trend and optimize your website content accordingly.

Social media marketing and social book marking continue to be one of the top ways of gaining links for websites. If you are already making efforts in this area, you must double your efforts in the early months of the coming year before the community sites get flooded. However, more social networking sites will sprout to meet the increasing demands. One of the social book marking strategies that has been under utilized lately will gain prominence in the coming year and it is the free classified sites. Many sites that offer shorter free advertising periods will increase the posting period to attract new posts. People who have been posting their ads and services in these sites will now try to do so to get a short-term back links. Free classifieds sites also bring in a lot of targeted traffic to the websites besides being a source of short-term back links.

Since mobile searches are becoming more and more popular, webmasters can expect a lot of traffic from this segment too. All promotional efforts in this area will bear rich fruits.

People will start preferring portal styled search engines more when compared to pure search engines. Currently, this is the trend in China; this trend is likely to spread to other major internet markets as well. So if you are concentrating only on promoting your website in Google, it is high time that you start concentrating on promoting your website in other major portal styled search engines too.

You will be able to increase your ROI on your website promotion by concentrating more on organic traffic. This will bring you a steady flow of traffic to your website and you can use paid approaches as and when needed. Your major concentration should be to boost  organic traffic to your website.

More products and services those have been offline so far too will try to find their online space in the coming years and as you can expect, every niche will be saturated with competition.

Leave Four Bad SEO Habits in 2008 December 30th, 2008

As we leave behind 2008, there are some SEO habits we need to shed as well! These used to work, but now are going by the wayside as the search engines readjust and refine to keep webmasters from taking advantage of loopholes. What used to be cutting edge and innovative becomes sluggish and non-responsive.

1. Keyword Stuffing. Stop stuffing keywords! As Google and others start paying attention to things like how often your visitors skip away after landing at your site, bad content is no longer going to cut it. Google in particular isn’t weighting anything in your favor, even for meta tags, headers or keywords, so just quit already. High quality landing pages are where the focus needs to be.

2. Article Spinning. Hailed last year as the supreme way to get links, this is falling out of favor as well. Writing an article with nine paragraphs three times and using a software to mix and match all twenty-seven paragraphs in all possible permutations in order to submit to hundreds of article databases might get you links, but their quality is dubious to say the least. It’s only a matter of time until this is labeled ‘article spamming’. In no alternate reality can this be considered ‘original content’.

3. Linking for links alone. Don’t waste your time running around insanely looking for links that could potentially harm you! PageRank is on the decline, and Google is bound to realize sooner or later that no-follow is becoming the name of the game. Better one really good high quality link than a dozen bad ones! Double your results by obtaining links that not only boost your profile with Google, but bring you actual traffic as well!

4. Overloading your homepage. You can make your home page six screens long and optimized for bear - but if it takes too long to load you’ve not only damaged your Quality Score but you’ve turned off potential visitors. Not everyone has fiber-optic internet yet! Google also feels that making visitors wait an insanely long time is not a good practice and will count off for it when it comes to your ad prices as well as possibly hurting your ranking.

This doesn’t even touch on so called black hat practices - all of these are methods that were touted to be the best way to improve rankings!

Tomorrow: Looking Forward - The Future of SEO in 2009

Preparing for the Year Ahead December 30th, 2008

As we are awaiting the New Year, it is good to plan our SEO efforts along with our marketing plan. Many website owners set aside their budget for their marketing activities but they fail to take into consideration SEO for their website. You must have a blue print of your SEO efforts for the entire year based on your review for the year that went by.

All the traffic to your website can be classified into two categories. The first category is organic traffic and the second type of traffic is paid traffic. You will be able to increase your success rate and your website’s conversion rate when you have the right blend of these two approaches. If you ignore one for the other, you should be ready to expect loss in one form or the other. If you ignore your efforts to drive organic traffic and concentrate on paid traffic and Pay Per Click campaigns then you will drain all your budget on these campaigns reducing the ROI and profit margins. On the other hand, when you ignore your Pay Per Click campaigns completely, then you might at times lose out on a steady flow of visitor traffic.

If you plan well, you can increase your PPC spending on months that matter the most and when you are waiting for your SEO efforts to yield results. Every business and service will have peak seasons and off seasons. You must know your businesses peak seasons and off seasons. You must start making all your SEO efforts and link building efforts anticipating your peak season. You must not start making your SEO efforts close to the peak season or as the peak season starts. As we know, it takes some time before all our SEO efforts can bear results. So plan accordingly so that you are ready for the peak season. You must also increase your PPC ad spending during peak season so that you can tap the maximum out of your website.

As you enter into off-season, you must set aside time for all your linking efforts and social book marking efforts. You must also keep a tab on your competitors and their websites so that you can take necessary steps to fight your competition.

When you plan your efforts for the entire year, you will be in better control of your growth and success. This does not mean that you should stick to your plans rigidly regardless of what is happening in the market. You should also always make your efforts in conjunction with the market trend. You can always modify or change your plan for a particular period of the year based on what will be most beneficial to your website’s online performance.

You must have a balanced approach; both working without plans and blindly sticking to the plans without taking into consideration the market trends can be counter productive.

Reviewing Your SEO Effort Pays December 30th, 2008

As 2008 comes to an end, it is good to review your SEO efforts that you have taken in the year that went by. This year has been a very tough year for all the businesses and we all know the reason – global financial recession has affected all the businesses severely. People’s online and offline spending has come down drastically. It is not only individuals and families that were trying to cutback on their costs. Even billion dollar companies were trying to go lean and mean.

If you have managed to be successful with your SEO efforts in this scenario, you can be sure that you can easily manage any situation because online competition cannot get any tougher. You must remember that the persisting effects of recession will not disappear immediately. Unless you assess your efforts you will not be able to be sure of your success. You need to clearly list all the SEO efforts that you have made and you must list both on page SEO efforts and off page SEO efforts. Getting a breakdown of the success rate for each effort can be little difficult because often we make multiple SEO efforts at the same time. If you notice tremendous success in a certain period, you can make a note of the combination of efforts that worked the best. So that you can use the same strategy and improve upon the results.

When you are analyzing your SEO efforts do not consider your efforts in isolation. Always take into account the general market trend for the period that you are analyzing. You can come up with monthly and quarterly analysis. If you have a Google analytics account, you can make use of the free statistics that are available for your website. If you do not use Google analytics, then it is high time that you signed up for your free account and start using it in the year to come. Such efforts will take you one-step closer to success.

Statistics in themselves are useless, it is the interpretation of the statistics that is available at hand is what will turn out to be beneficial. You must keep track of the visitor traffic trend with each search engine update. This must be considered in conjunction with your conversion rates. You might have upgraded your website or redesigned your website. This does not mean that you will always get better rankings in the search engines and better conversion rates. There are webmasters who complain that their website upgrades had negative effects on their conversion rates and on their search rankings.

The advantage of reviewing your own SEO efforts is that you can avoid repeating your mistakes and repeat the strategies that brought success. This will improve your success rate in the year to come. As you would have learnt already you can never afford to take rest when it comes to SEO. At the same time only when you employ the right strategies your continuous efforts will bear fruit.

SEO and UO December 29th, 2008

Search engine optimization is important for your site. So is user optimization. If you focus on one to the exclusion of the other, you won’t be utilizing your website to its maximum potential.

There are many misconceptions about different optimization techniques. There are SEO methods you can use to gear for keywords and others for linking power. What many people don’t realize us that often these same methods can be taken a step further and be used to increase UO as well.

Using articles for marketing purposes can help SEO and UO. If you properly optimize your articles for keywords, the search engines will be able to determine relevance to a particular topic. If you do a really good job, the article will still be readable and informative as well.

When you submit the articles to directories, you are garnering links that help your PageRank and increase your ranking on Google or other search engines. At the same time you are increasing your visibility to users and extending your demographic base to people who routinely search the directories for information.

If you can manage to supply many related articles to the directories, you can get additional traffic to those articles as viewers move from one to the next, You can also keep encouraging them to visit your site for even more information. Links are available so you can link to your website and blog or even your website homepage and then an inner page.

The same thing goes for your website itself. You want your pages to be SEO, but if they aren’t UO then you just wasted a lot of time and money. You can get the traffic through SEO, but you need to UO to keep the traffic. If the visitor instantly clicks away once they see your home page or landing page, then what good did it all do?

Make sure you include some instant gratification on landing pages. Landing pages and emails for auto responder courses need to be more UO than SEO. That’s because you really want the search engines to ignore these - you should always disallow the spiders from accessing your landing pages that are not really any more than a squeeze page.

All of your links should be workable - they aren’t just for link power but they can be conduits for more traffic and you can see the difference when they are all working. A well placed link won’t just deliver juice to your site, it will deliver targeted, heavy traffic that could be even better than you dreamed of. Make sure you are thinking of practical, UO based applications to all of your SEO opportunities! Both are needed to make a dream come completely alive!
